How to Make Money from a Blog: Things You Need to Know

Is it possible to earn money with a blog today?

Of course…and you can actually earn A LOT!

It is easy?

No, but if you stop being guided by your intuition and follow appropriate strategies, you will greatly increase your chances of succeeding and making money from your blog.

I know, hardly anyone writes about how to make money from a blog , right!? ?

So, after convincing myself (and I am certainly stubborn), I’m here to tell you from my own experience how I personally make money blogging and pass along those tips to you.

Let’s get started.

How do you start making money from your blog?

It all begins with the concept and the execution. Follow these five steps to kick things off.

  1. Choose your topic or niche
  2. Selection a CMS (content management system) to build your blog
  3. Create your brand and your blog
  4. Define the strategy for growth
  5. Choose ways to monetize the blog

To get things moving more quickly, here are some simple hacks to earn money with a blog.

  • Advertising
  • CPA (Cost Per Share)
  • Affiliate Marketing
  • Sell products
  • Post reviews and sponsored posts
  • Sell your blog

The number of bloggers successfully making money with a blog is increasing rapidly. This is largely due to the trend to shift business to the online realm. Blogging is simply another form of online business, just like ecommerce, discount coupons or dropshipping.

How much money can you earn with a blog?

You can definitely earn money with a blog. I’ve done it, and many of my colleagues have done it. There are tons of success stories out there. But, just how much can you make?

In my case, today I live off of the revenue generated by my blog, and I have been doing it for several years (and I hope it will be many more ?).

But be careful with this. Just because I did it does NOT mean that it is something easy to achieve. Any blogger worth her salt will tell you that they didn’t get where they are today without losing sleeping and putting in tons of work.

How you monetize a blog?

If you are still reading, apparently I have not yet completely discouraged you with what I have told you so far. That’s great! Thanks for sticking around, because sticking to it is one of the most important factors in running a successful blog.

To help you now take that next step and start monetizing your blog, I will explain 4 steps that you should follow to increase your chances of making money (and lots of it) from your blog – with either “direct” or “indirect” blog revenue.

Choose a good theme or niche:  because not all themes “move” the same money or are equally competitive.

Create a quality blog with great content: because if your idea is to hit it out of the park in your selected niche with a blog made on a cheap platform or with a design that looks it was built by someone like Homer Simpson, you’d better think again.

Plan and follow a good strategy: because, for example, writing about the cold in the North Pole is not the same as recommending travel insurance to go to the North Pole. You need to offer real value to your readers and in a way that connects. This should all be laid out in a strategy so you have a clear path to get where you want.

Choose the best way to monetize your blog: because depending on the theme or niche and the strategy you are going to follow, there will be some ways to earn money that fit (and perform) better than others. The same strategy for a lifestyle blog, for example, may not work for a marketing blog (like the one you’re reading right now).

What are the best ways to earn money with a blog?

For starters, not all the ways to earn money online are worth attempting. A blog can be a good source of income, if used properly and at the right time, but it can fail if you don’t apply the right methods.

That is why I am going to explain the best way to earn money from a blog (in my opinion, of course!)

And I will also tell you the ones that I use in this same blog (it it’s not broke, why fix it, right?).

It is the “classic” way to earn money with a blog and one of the most used. Look at integrating ad networks like Google’s Ad Sense into your blog so you can earn money passively when your readers click on an ad displayed by Google or whatever ad network you choose to work with.

CPA (Cost Per Share)

This form of monetization is based on the fact that the advertiser pays you if you get enough visitors to your website to take an agreed upon reaction that results in payment.

Affiliate Marketing

For me, this is the best way to earn money with a blog (if done right, of course), and the most beneficial for both the advertiser and you.

You help a company sell their products, and each time you sell something, you get a commission.

Let’s take an example if you are selling Amazon products with discounts then you can make better commissions on each product. Another high-earning affiliate niche is software. For example, you can make recurring payments each month for SaaS products if you help companies sign up users.

Sell products

Without a doubt this is one of the forms that is in fashion, especially some of its “variants” such as digital training or information products (the famous infoproducts ) or physical products (shirts, mugs, etc.).

Be careful, because the bad thing about this way of making money is that, as a general rule, it requires more time and effort than, for example, advertising (which requires setup and then simply building traffic to get clicks).

Post reviews and sponsored posts

One of the ways to make money on the rise in blogging now that the topic of selling sponsored content and links on your website.

People will pay you to post articles on your site or drop links into existing articles. The more traffic and the higher authority you have on your blog, the more you can charge.

Sell your blog

Do people love your blog so much that you get requests to buy your blog? Why not consider selling? ?‍♂️

Maybe you have created a blog (or many) and have helped it grow little by little until it has a significant following.

You may even be earning a little money with it, but for whatever reason you have reached a “top” and you can not get more out of it.

Well if your blog is not associated with your personal brand (logically, I would not sell my blog, and you shouldn’t either if it’s branded with your name) and you think you are going to get more out of selling it than continuing with it, sell it!

There are sooo many people interested in buying sites that already have a following or a validated idea so they don’t have to start from scratch.

Summing up

To finish, I will give you a short summary and make everything clearer than water, ok?

  • You can make money with a blog, but it takes a lot of time and effort.
  • Earning enough money with a blog to live on is also possible, but you need to have a strategy, and you need to understand it’s a marathon, not a sprint.
  • Affiliate marketing is one of the best ways to make money from your blog, but you can also sell content or take on other efforts.
  • Find the right niche that has a solid audience and focus there.

  1. Very informative article Selena, with both positive and negative answers on the internet (about the earning potential of a blogger). It sometimes gets difficult for beginners to get into this industry, and people end up killing their dreams. However, you have shown the real picture here with tips that one can actually implement.

I am into the affiliate marketing industry, and people can indeed make money from it, only if they do not take this as some magic trick to get rich overnight.

    • Hi Clay, Thanks for stopping by the blog! It is definitely difficult to crack into the blogging space, but if you focus and you don’t give up, you can definitely make it happen. I encourage aspiring bloggers to focus on a niche about which they are passionate. If you focus on a niche you don’t care about or you don’t know much about just because of the money, you will fail. If you focus on something you’re passionate about, you’ll fight through the tough times and ultimately build that sought after blogging revenue. Great point about the affiliate marketing as well. It’s not a magic potion. You can certainly make money from it, but it takes a strategic approach as well as patience. I appreciate the comment!
